Specificity and Topicality: The Two Pillars of Vulnerability in Forums

When I first started leading forums, I was hesitant to share my own struggles. I thought I needed to project an image of strength and confidence. But the more I opened up, the more I realized that vulnerability is actually a superpower. It allows us to connect with others on a deeper level, build trust, and create a sense of belonging.

The point is vulnerability is essential for creating a thriving forum. It’s one of the four pillars of great forums. When we’re vulnerable, we give others permission to be vulnerable too. This creates a ripple effect that can transform your forum from a collection of individuals into a true community.

What exactly is vulnerability?

There are two types of vulnerability: specificity and topicality.

  • Specificity is about being specific about something. For example, saying “I’m struggling with my business” is one level. “I’m struggling with my business because our sales are sagging and the team is unhappy” is another level. Saying “I’m losing $10,000 a month and I’m not sure how much longer I can stay afloat” is another level. The more specific you are, the more vulnerable you are.
  • Topicality is related to what topics you choose to talk about. Talking about your vacation or your new car purchase are probably not very vulnerable topics. But if you talk about your relationship with your spouse, your struggles with addiction, or your deepest fears, those are typically more vulnerable topics.

How to encourage vulnerability in your forum

There are a few things you can do to encourage vulnerability in your forum:

  • Lead by example. When you’re vulnerable yourself, it gives others permission to be vulnerable too.
  • Create a safe space. Make sure your forum is a place where people feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings without judgment and is 100% confidential.
  • Vulnerability rating. I’ve seen some Forums give each other a rating after their updates on how vulnerable they were.
  • Thank people for their vulnerability. Let them know that you appreciate them sharing their thoughts and feelings with the group.

The benefits of vulnerability

When people feel comfortable being vulnerable in your forum, the benefits are numerous:

  • Deeper connections: Vulnerability allows people to connect with each other on a deeper level.
  • Increased trust: When people are vulnerable, it builds trust among the group.
  • Greater sense of belonging: Vulnerability creates a sense of belonging and community.
  • Improved problem-solving: When people feel comfortable sharing their challenges, it can lead to more creative and effective problem-solving.
  • Increased engagement: When people feel connected to the group, they’re more likely to be engaged and participate in the forum.

Vulnerability is essential for creating a thriving forum. When we’re vulnerable, we give others permission to be vulnerable too. This creates a ripple effect that can transform your forum from a collection of individuals into a true community.

So next time you’re in your forum, take a chance and be vulnerable. You might be surprised at the results.
